Tamara Dearing CD Release Party Sept. 4th

I'm proud to announce that the talented Tamara Dearing will be releasing a much anticipated CD on September 4th at the Vernon Club in Louisville. The Female Art Collective will be set up and there to support her. She has been such a great part of the collective since the beginning and we've been honored that she's played a couple shows for us in the past.

The Show is Sat. Sept. 4th starting at 8pm @ the Vernon Club (1575 Story Avenue Louisville, KY 40206-1759) which is a very cool venue- it's a large open space under the bowling alley (which is one of the longest running bowling alley's in the nation!)

Fellow musicians Iamis and Squeeze-Bot will also be performing.

Earth day benefit show 4/22/2010

Please come out for our "groovy" earth day celebration at BBC St Matthews next Thursday, 4/22/2010. We will have corn-hole, an organic beer unveiling and environmentally friendly merch. FAC is donating 10% of all sales to Kimmy Kremer's trip to Mexico this summer for Habitat for Humanity. We will also have a raffle and other ways to help raise money. Spring Trunk Show featuring Laura Fauna

Hello everyone, I hope you can come out to our next event. It is the Spring Fling trunk show, with mostly clothing from Female Art Collective's vintage collection and Laura Fauna's new spring collection. Beech designs will also be there with beautiful jewelry. The show is at Laura Fauna's headquarters at 1839 Bonnycastle Avenue in the Highlands on Saturday April 10th from 1-5pm. We will have sweet tea and snacks and a play area set up for the kids! Hope to see you there!

Sorry it's been awhile! We had a very busy Christmas season!

Mary and I did most of our Christmas shopping with independent and handmade business! We've been talking about the importance of supporting local independent business and the handmade community a lot lately.

For the month of January, the Traughber's (my family) are going to support only independent business and handmade entrepreneurs! I'm going to document the process including how we found each place, pictures of what the business has to offer, and how the purchases have impacted our lives in a positive way.

Mary and I are meeting later today. We have a lot in store for 2010. New artists, new venues for monthly trunk shows, new products for the boutique, new FAC shirt designs, new batch of "Real Women Drink Real Beer" shirts available online this time!, etc.

I will have more details in the middle of this week!

Oh & how awesome is it that she sent us a Sloe Gin Fizz recipe!

Ingredients::
1 oz. gin
1 oz. sloe gin
3/4 oz. fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon powdered sugar
Soda Water

Pour gins, sugar, and lemon juice into cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain into highball glass with ice. Top with soda. Enjoy!

Definitely trying that in the near future.

The Female Art Collective has over doubled in size! We're currently working with 10 more new artists that will join the FAC in the next month. Be part of our expansion!

What is the Female Art Collective?
The Female Art Collective features many talented female artists, designers, and entrepreneurs. We support local business, art, music, and non-profit groups. Our goal is to promote community and to redefine the boutique experience. We hold multiple trunk shows a month at various independent business locations throughout Louisville & Southern Indiana. These shows center around live local music, art from our boutique, and many events are focused on promoting non-profit groups.

How do I join the Female Art Collective?
The Female Art Collective is run by Mary Levinsky and Katy Traughber. We hand select artists and their works for our boutique. Artists/designers/entrepreneurs must fit with our collective. We look for motivated, free thinking, good hearted artists. We are not concerned with any prior business experience. New artists are more than welcome to be a part of our collective.

Why focus on female artists?
Mary and I (Katy) met at the Good Folk Fest one year in Louisville, KY. The conversation started with how grateful we were for the Good Folk Fest. We then continued to discuss the downfalls of being a new artist, not belonging to certain groups or cliques of artists in this area. We also were discouraged at the lack of cross promotions between local businesses, musicians, and artists.
We wanted to build up our community. We wanted to have an open door approach to new artists or veteran artists, regardless of how well built up their reputation. We were motivated to help promote worthy designers and artists based on the quality of their ideas and art alone.
There is so much to take on when it comes down the idea of “community”. Mary and I choose to attach ourselves to one problem area, the community of women.
We are feminists in the sense that we feel each woman has the right to choose where in life she wants to take herself. Each of our artists, including ourselves, come from very diverse backgrounds and lifestyles. We are blessed to have so much variety in our collective.

We work with many men including musicians, business owners, etc. We simply chose to help women feel supported in a very competitive field and to promote a sense of community in a society that encourages so many negative stereotypes of women, including feminist women.
We are redefining the boutique experience and reshaping the way people view women entrepreneurship and community.

I don't know if it would truly be a Mustache Bash without her amazing handmade metal mustache earrings!

Lindsay & I go way back. We were in junior high and varsity cheerleading together.
& if you can spot us in this pic... You have an eagle eye or two.

So I ran into her while buying jewelry supplies. Low and behold we're both into jewelry making these days! Funny how you lose touch, then cross paths again.

She has a lot of other great designs!

Busy week ahead. We have 3 new artists coming in, plus new pieces from veteran artists.

On a personal level I have multiple appointments between me and the kids, pick ups for FAC, drop offs for Withering Elm Jewelry, shipping, paperwork for school... finding supplies and building new displays!

Saturday is our Mustache Bash at New Albanian Brewing Company!
This week I'll be picking up more mustache goodies from Only Embry and a new artist Lindsay Lou!
Lots of new stuff!

Then the following week is our Bad Sweater Party at Bluegrass Brewing Co. (the St. Matthew's location).
Ben (my husband) and I have already rushed out to Good Will to pick our bad sweaters... Who am I kidding? We're always there anyway. Ben's sweater wins by far. It's fantastic.

I think Mary has pick ups with several artists this week as well. Two new artists. So I guess that makes 4 total this week. My mind is so stretched, I can't really think.

So on a totally different note... I was going to write about this in my Withering Elm Jewelry blog, but I think the female awesomeness that omits like super nova from this band makes it worth mentioning in here. Jessi Zazu Wariner is my cousin... in the way that we used to build forts and play barbies when we were potty training. So I've been acquainted with her headstrong determination and musical/artistic skill my whole life. But still!!! I am amazed! She formed the band Those Darlins with two close friends, Nikki & Kelly... then later her other half, Linwood.

Jessi's been doing art her whole life. Her parents are artists, therefore art was in abundance all around her growing up. Anyway, she came up with some really great art that I turned into cameos. So now they have their own Those Darlins line of necklaces... Though I still have to ship them out. I kept screwing up the cameos, or I'd be too hard on the design & start over.

However, I think in the spirt of female art and entrepreneurship, we should totally have them in the shop!

Gah! I have to get pictures. But for now... I leave you with a little music & some of Jessi's art!

" I started crocheting almost 2 years ago when my mom gave me a “Learn to Crochet” book for Christmas. Being left-handed made it a little difficult because I had to flip the instructions in my head, but I was immediately hooked. I started making hats and selling them in my Etsy shop along with jewelry and other handmade goods inspired by the surf lifestyle. I love making things and am always learning new crafts, but crochet is my favorite medium. It lets me work with color and texture in an almost sculptural way.

I met Katy at an event held at BBC a few months ago. I was drawn to her table filled with wonderfully unique items, and we struck up a conversation. I mentioned I crocheted and she said “Can you make hats?” I have been in the Female Art Collective ever since, and it has been a great experience. Katy and Mary are awesome to work with and are truly committed to making the FAC successful.

I really enjoy going to the FAC events. It has given me the chance to see how people react to my hats, which allows me to understand what is working and adapt to what people want. Being a part of the Female Art Collective has really helped me grow as an artist. I have several new hat designs in the works, and I plan on expanding into fingerless gloves, bags, and maybe even crochet jewelry! "

Jami is a wonderful example to new handmade business owners and new artists with the Female Art Collective. She is always offering us a large selection with the same quality and Sunset Surf feel. The Female Art Collective is joining forces with the New Albanian Brewing Co. for a night of art and music!
We had so much fun at Fringe Fest, hosted by the New Albanian Brewing Co., that we decided to hold a trunk show at their Rich O's location centered around local music.

There will be performances by Ben Traughber & Daniel Gruner, Lacey Guthrie, Simon McKim, and A Mourning Rain.
New musicians! We're really excited about this line up.

So what's going on with the site?

Mary and I are now combining shipping costs with the price of the listing. We will be posting the complete price in the title to help our site become easier to navigate. People can enjoy looking through more listings and not waste time opening up so many windows. We're expecting this to be much more convenient and user friendly.

We are working on a banner for the top of our page to announce this new change once it's complete.

New Roots seeks to meet the needs of urban communities by improving access to fresh food for urban residents and marketing opportunities in the city for local and regional farmers.
The New Roots program impacts the local food system through the development of the Fresh Stop Project, a community institution-driven fresh food distribution program, nutrition education and health research, and policy campaigns that improve the disparities currently present in our system.

New Roots includes a wide range of community partners, including the West Chestnut Street Baptist Church, City Fresh of Cleveland, and the Healthy for Life! Clinic at Kosair Children's Hospital.

Mission:New Roots is a non-profit organization that works to develop a just and sustainable food system in the Ohio River Valley Region.

Female Art Collective will be holding a raffle. All ticket sales will go to New Roots.

Female Artist Feature:: LANY DEVENING

I'm browsing through Etsy one night with my husband... We come across a print of a small child shooting lazers from his eyes into an owl. My mind is blown. The artist is Lany Devening. I email her right away, asking her to be a part of the Female Art Collective. She's new to Louisville and is more than happy to be involved.

So I go to meet Lany... Picturing her as possibly having a shy darker demeanor... At least some outward signs of her dark sharp humor that her artwork omits.

I walk into the coffee shop and look around. I'm looking for two things, this image of an artist I haven't met and a huge box. In our email conversations, she assures me "I'll be carrying a huge box full of art". Huge box (check). Dark and mysterious artist... No. Here sits Lany with a beautiful smile, long sandy brown hair, original (BUT) cheerful style, and no chips on her shoulder what-so-ever. Now this is mysterious, and I go on talking to her for over an hour and a half just to get to the bottom of who she is.

She's intelligent with a clever sense of humor, very open, very knowledgable of the human mind and its relationship with life. She's brought prints and wood mounts and embroidery. She goes on about the process of each piece, everything has a back story.

We come to a house... it's on fire. & I remember many of her prints where there is smoke climbing up the stairways and circling in around people and animals. It brings this huge relief. The past year of my life felt that way, the way of something so destructive creeping in and everything else around it is seemingly picture perfect. Now I'm not saying that's the point she's getting at, but she's pulled me in for sure. And that's definitely the thing about art, it puts words to pieces of our lives that we fall short to describe or grasp fully.

And again with her embroidery of a house on fire with rainbows emitting from it. This piece being a labor of love taking her up to 6 months to make.

Then there are my favorites... Where she's used old family portraits as inspiration. This boy seems to be smiling behind those eyes, but you can't tell if it from a playful thought or a devious little plot... It has a Village of the Damned feel to it. I'm creeped out and in love at the same time.

Q & A ::

What drew you to art therapy?

I feel kind of like art therapy found me. I was working in a group home and a co-worker that had volunteered at the state psychiatric hospital gave me the number of her supervisor. One thing led to another, and she became my boss. She is an art therapist, so getting to work in the field is what convinced me to merge my favorite things- art, psychology, and working with people.

What does your art do for you personally?

Art makes me sane (when its not driving me crazy!). The process is so addictive, and the finished product never ceases to amaze me. I love printmaking so much because adding that final layer is like opening a present.

What drew us to your art was it's playful dark side. What do you think contributed to your unique style?

I've always been drawn to scary movies and books. I loved Nancy Drew mysteries when I was little, and I LOVE the Twilight Zone. There will never be a more perfect show. My art has definitely been influenced by these things. I am also so inspired by old family photos, so if I'm going to incorporate the two interests together, it needs to be with a little humor and color.

You master different media and techniques, is there a new medium or technique that you're itching to try?

Lately I've itching to do some ceramics. You would think my previous experience would deter this itch, but I'm just so jealous of people who can throw beautiful functional pottery on the wheel.

What are some of your favorite things about your new home here in Louisville?

I love my fireplaces and huge windows and all the space. My dog is a big fan of the sunshine too.

What are some of your favorite experiences during art school, art therapy, or shows, etc. ?

My favorite experiences have all been about meeting new people and seeing what they make. If its in a gallery, school, or even a hospital, sharing artwork with others is always the best!

So I guess Fall is here! I've been waiting all year for this, and with all of our new events, staying home with the kids more, and my husband getting back in school... It just sort of crept up on me!

Mary & I are welcoming about 10 new artists in the next few weeks! Great Fall gear for sure!
PLUS we're putting in some new orders next week! The shop is going to be filling up and out from every direction.
We will even have some new sections!

Just a few things off the top of my head... New pieces from Laura Fauna, dog coats from Raccoon Eyes, hats for adults and children, new art from Lany Devening, a whole bath and body section!, more home decor, brand new pieces from Withering Elm Jewelry, etc.

Such a busy month in October! We'll be part of the Fringe Fest. We are joining the BBC for a huge ladies' night "Real Women Drink Real Beer". We are combining our efforts to come up with some great shirts! We are planning an event with the New Albanian Brewing company for early November!

I've been doing a large amount of porch setting, or balcony rather. But I know as it gets colder, being stuck inside is going to give me cabin fever. I have been brainstorming about some simple projects to make visual stimulating storage and that seasonal "blah" more tolerable! There will be a do it yourself on turning bookshelves into cabinets, how to sew storage for the car, and eco-friendly seasonal decorating. There is so much waste during the holidays! I'm looking into ways to reuse objects and also to use organic biodegradable material.

In my life exists a very on the go, out of my way, climb the walls three year old. I'm lucky to keep her dressed and put together for a couple of hours. To boot, she has wild curly hair and at times looks as though she was raised by a wild pack of family dogs. Thank you Modest Mouse for putting the words to the commotion that is my daughter. Then to sort of complete the set, because they always are glued together, I have a very fast, very curious one year old.

These are handmade by a stay at home mother. I support any mother, because trust me they need support!
They fit anywhere from around three months to preschool age... ACTUALLY! I STAND CORRECTED! Last night a very fashionable 7 year old tried a pair on as knee high leggies and totally rocked them with every inch of her personality. I was impressed.

The thing I love about them the most is that they enable you to layer. As a mom, especially if you're on limited income or a tight budget, it's very important to make clothes last or take advantage of sales. Sometimes clearance racks are full of out of season clothing, like shorter skirts, etc. These tights make shorts, skirts, and dresses fall friendly. Layer them under pants for a snow day, and take them back out of the drawer for layering in Spring!

Perfect for protecting babies' legs while they're learning to crawl.

These are the same pair on both my kids, size 12 mo & 3/4T.

Female Art Collective will be part of New Albanian Brewing Company's FRINGE FEST this year.

"With New Albany's annual autumn street fair, Harvest Homecoming, little more than a week away, the NABC is hard at work preparing for the second iteration of its own - admittedly somewhat skewed - take on a civic festival, Fringe Fest 2009!

The goal of last year's inaugural Fringe Fest was "to create a cultural counterpoint to Harvest Homecoming and provide unique music, interesting exhibits, captivating films, and – most importantly – good beer. Fringe Fest embraces everything creative and original, and welcomes anything outside of the social ‘norm’”.

So it remains this year, with the added incentive of trying to maintain the creative atmosphere for a full week instead of just doing “booth days” downtown. Here's a partial view of an early draft of the schedule; expect there to be changes, and remember that all events will take place at the NABC's Bank Street Brewhouse.

Saturday, October 3:
Fringe Fest kicks off with an 'After the Parade Party', live music with Clint Ackerman and more, and NABC Progressive Pints on the Bank Street Brewhouse's north patio.

Sunday, October 4:
Bloody Mary Bar from 12:00 to 3:00, Metro Area Restaurant Employee Appreciation Night from 4:00 to 9:00, with music by Rebecca Williams, Luke Asher and more.

Monday, October 5:
The Bank Street Brewhouse is closed, of course.

Tuesday, October 6:
We were going to do a pig roast and offer 'swine flu' vaccinations, but as with most great ideas ... well, our stars have so far failed to align. Tuesday remains in the 'To Be Announced' category.

Wednesday, October 7:
Klezmer Nacht! If we can book the Klezmer guys (John’s working on it), this one’s in the book for the patio or the tent, if the tent is up.

Thursday through Saturday, October 8-10:
And for the main event, we'll be erecting the 'Big Top' in the Bank Street Brewhouse's parking lot - well, as big a top as the parking lot will hold; Chef Josh Lehman will be grilling a special fest menu in the open air; Rosa L. Stumblebus will be serving beer; there'll be live music - and perhaps other unusual entertainments - on the patio each evening; and an exhibit of local artists inside. We’ll be serving beer from noon until last call. I’m waiting for verification of grilling hours, and we’re working on the lineup of artists.

Thursday, October 8
Music by Old Man and others TBA
Beginning after dark, it’s Louisville Film Society night and a potpourri of shorts and snippets on the silver (white?) screen.

Friday, October 9
Afternoon musical acts TBA. National Hotel plays from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., followed by the Involuntary’s at 9:00 p.m. and Adventure at 10:00 p.m.

Saturday, October 10
Afternoon musical acts TBA. NABC’s own Jared Williamson will be playing from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with J. Glenn at 9:00 p.m. and a headliner at 10:00 p.m. TBA."

Truly a Southern Indiana marvel. haha It really is so much fun, in the cheesiest never admit it to your friends sort of way. Whatever, I'm proud to love Harvest.

What is amazing is you can enjoy Harvest Homecoming, get burnt out on it, then head on over just a short distance to Fringe Fest. Or avoid Harvest all together and bee-line it to Fringe Fest. If you haven't experienced the beer list at New Albanian... I don't know what to say for you. I don't think there's anything that I could say. DO IT! DO IT ASAP! You're quality of life depends on it!

So I'm really excited, if you couldn't tell, that the Female Art Collective is going to be part of all this commotion. Last year was a blast.
